Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris on Netflix could have been so much more than it was, which was a big disappointment. I try and watch most shows that have gay themes or characters for the simple reason I can identify easily with them being gay myself and I might also learn something. Uncoupled could have been a show that I identified closely with.
The show was created by Darren Star fo Sex and the City fame and Jeffrey Richman of Modern Family fame. The show follows a group of friends as newly dumped Michael after a 17 year relation navigates the new world he enters.
I lived in New York as a gay man. I had ended a 17 year relationship. I had to navigate a world that suddenly seemed new to me. The man character in Uncoupled was named Michael as am I. My life became quite comedic as I entered this strange new world as a single gay man but I also learned much about myself and others. Michael in Uncoupled was funny in a juvenile way and missed so many great opportunities to share meaningful insights to the viewers.
I don’t often write about shows I don’t like however I’m sure many of you are like me and like to see gay themed shows. Trust me you will not miss anything if you give it a pass. If you're bored give it a shot but it is amazing how long a 30 minute can sometimes seem.
